Full of caustic wit and a slightly dark edge, "The Ref" proved to be the breakthrough movie for comedian Dennis Leary. In this black comedy, Leary plays a cat burglar who gets more than he bargained for when he gets trapped in an affluent Connecticut neighborhood and is forced to hold an irritating, bickering couple hostage (Judy Davis and Kevin Spacey in riotously sharp and wonderfully combative performances). "The Ref" has a wickedly funny screenplay with some hysterical dialogue, and it offers plenty of laugh out-loud moments during a series of comic confusions. And don't miss the great opening scene with Davis and Spacey as they try to keep their cool during a visit with a marriage counselor.
